History of Ashoka in Canada

Ashoka: Innovators for the Public is an international community of business and social entrepreneurs who are actively changing the fields in which they work. Ashoka has over 2,000 Fellows across 60 countries. Using a cutting edge nominator network, Ashoka chooses its applicants, locating the most innovative entrepreneurs with the strongest prospects for impact locally, nationally and globally. Candidates are engaged in a rigorous five-step process that addresses our five criteria: new idea for systemic change, creativity, entrepreneurial quality, social impact and ethical fibre.

In Canada, an exemplary Fellowship has emerged since 2002, made up of leading social entrepreneurs affecting change from Newfoundland to Victoria. From early stage to mature Fellows, Ashoka identifies Fellows’ needs, and creates a series of services to help them improve their impact and for many of them, to influence public policy. Canadian policymakers, private funders and social investors dedicated to investing in massive, positive change, have recognized fellows.

Ashoka supports Fellows’ ideas and organizations throughout their lifetime. We provide a three-year living stipend and our strategic partners provide free training and consulting services for Fellows. Our global partners include: McKinsey & Co., Hill & Knowlton, and pro-bono lawyers. An international Fellowship network links citizen sector projects nationally, and facilitates the export of proven models across continents and around the globe.

Ashoka is poised to take Canadian innovation global, increasing our international profile, while eradicating the root causes of chronic issues at home by using a globally successful model. We do not act alone. Ashoka Canada is committed to working with organizations across sectors to advance the field and build collaboration.

Although Ashoka does not access government funds, it supports Fellows’ partnerships with these key actors. It relies entirely on private donations. With financial support, a widespread resource base and access to a global network of Fellows, Ashoka Canada is uniquely positioned to do this work. Fellows in Canada are implementing innovative solutions and developing sustainable organizations that create systemic change, in collaboration with various sectors. Ashoka Fellows have widely become role models and are playing a key role towards positive social change, one that we invite you to join us in supporting in Canada.

Yours Sincerely,

Celia Cruz
